Tip#1 How To Easily Add Security to Your Healthcare Practice

Posted on March 16, 2016 by Jean Eaton in Blog

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released an article, “10 security tips from the FTC on how to protect consumer data”.

Let's take a look at each of the ten tips and see how it can apply to your healthcare practice.

Tip#1 Start with Security

Set a policy in your practice to consider security before you buy anything.

For example – if you need a USB device – consider buying the model that automatically encrypts and requires a password to access the files. It may cost just a few dollars more, but isn't that money well spent on security?

I find that people will do the right thing – when it is easy for them to do so. This certainly applies to shredding machines. When you buy the right sized, business shredding machine that works quickly, quietly without jamming or making a mess – people will use the shredding machine. Tax season is a great time to take advantage of the many sales on shredding machines. Is it time for you to super-size your shredding?

What other examples of security practices can you easily implement in your business?

Business are Victims of Economic Crime and Fraud

Posted on March 14, 2016 by Jean Eaton in Blog

March is Fraud Prevention Month

40% of Canadian organizations reported that they were victims of fraud in the last two years. This includes asset mis-appropriation, procurement, and cyber fraud, as reported on CanadaAM on March 9, 2016 interview with Lori-Ann Beausoleil, PWC Canada.

Ophthalmology Business article, ‘6 Ways To Curb Employee Theft‘  includes tips that physicians and administrators can do to curb the risk of theft.

  1. Vet your employees
  2. Track inventory
  3. Let employees know that you are concerned about fraud
  4. Separate financial-related duties
  5. Out of sight, out of mind
  6. Use electronic health records (EHR) to your advantage

Read ‘6 Ways To Curb Employee Theft‘ to see all the suggestions by Jean L. Eaton, Steve Dawson, Jodie Boxe in this article by Vanessa Caceres.

For more suggestions on how to manage risks especially when your staff work alone, see my interview with Dave Rodwell, ‘Do Your Staff Work Alone?'

There are many things that you can do to prevent fraud in your healthcare practice. Being aware of the risk is your first step.

National Privacy & Data Governance Congress

Posted on March 2, 2016 by Jean Eaton in Blog

Privacy and Access Council of Canada offers a congress where delegates have a realistic opportunity to attend the sessions of interest. Plenaries and breakout sessions are longer than usual , and formal remarks are shorter, leaving time for speakers and delegates to engage in genuine conversation. And we ask speakers to offer practical guidance borne of their experience (not just theoretical advice or historical reviews) that delegates can put to work in their own organizations.

Learn, share and network at the 2016 National Privacy & Data Governance Congress. Join industry experts, risk management professionals, thought leaders and regulatory authorities to explore critical connections between privacy, access, security and compliance.

March 30, 31, April 1, 2016

Calgary, AB

Join speakers, delegates and thought leaders with shared interests in privacy, access and security. Colleagues from public and private institutions, federal, provincial and territorial governments, industry, academia and regulatory authorities will meet in a relaxed setting to enjoy workshop, breakout, keynote and plenary sessions.

Congress 2016 takes a refreshingly practical approach. Breakout sessions are longer than at most conferences, but formal presentations are shorter. Speakers offer practical examples and case studies, but are discouraged from using PowerPoint or similar tools (or distractions).

Continuing Education Credits applicable to PACC Professional Certification, and may qualify for CPD credits from other organizations as well.

Who should attend the Privacy and Data Governance Congress?

  • privacy officer
  • security officer
  • access and disclosure administrators
  • compliance officer
  • FOIP Co-ordinators
